If I were trapped on a deserted island, I would most DEFINITELY be happy with a stack of books (and coconuts, of course!). Narrowing down my favorite and necessary titles to ten, however, is just as torturous as being confined to a classroom on state standardized testing day with thirty teenagers... (STAAR is on my brain right now, I guess..) but here I go...
1. The Harry Potter series - I credit JK Rowling with encouraging me to explore books and my imagination. She (and Harry) gave me my love for books, so I find it cruel to leave Hogwarts behind. I would be completely satisfied living in her created world and imagining up new adventures for all my favorite characters.
2. The Hunger Games - I am pretty sure I could live without Catching Fire and Mockingjay, but I do not think I could let Hunger Games go. In fact, I bet I could learn some awesome survival skills from Katniss and the other tributes...
3. Raven Stole the Moon - Man, I LOVE this book. For weeks, I could not put it down, and I think my friends were sick of me telling them about it each chance I had. That being said, I am still pretty sure that I did not fully comprehend the novel the first time I read it, so seclusion on an island would be the perfect time for a second, deeper read.
4. Plague of Doves - After reading this in college, I began to read all novels like a writer. Erdrich taught me to look at the same story from all sides and never judge people based on first instincts, or even known memories. A great mystery and history of a small, northern people.
5. Lies My Teacher Told Me - Along similar lines as Plague of Doves, I owe my wonderful, albeit annoying to most of my college professors, ability to question EVERYTHING to this text. I would be content pouring through this book and rethinking all that I have ever known about US history.
6. Animal, Vegetable, Miracle - Kingsolver constructs a beautiful narrative documenting her family's venture into organic living for a single year. Little does she know, the life proves to be trying, difficult, and totally worth it. I love reading the journalistic pieces written by her husband, and the recipes from her daughter could come in hand if I can find some of the plants :)
7. Libra - I am always in the mood for a great conspiracy! Talk about wonderful entertainment when I start feeling bored looking at my amazing sand castles...
8. The Chronicles of Narnia - Honestly, I have not read them in their entirety. I have this really awesome book that has each book included (talk about a brick...) but I have only conquered the first 200 pages or so. Deserted on an island sounds like a great time to finally complete this masterpiece.
9. Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid on Earth - While taking a graphic novel course in college, I fell in love with Jimmy Corrigan, flaws and all. He is at times so pathetic, so helpless, so hopeless; yet, I find myself laughing out loud at his life. Am I mean? I may be... but there are only palm trees and sea shells to judge me, so I think I'll be okay. :)
AND FINALLY...
10. Seriously...I'm Kidding - I. Cannot. Live. Without. Ellen. With all the heavy from being shipwrecked on some random island without even a Wilson to console me, Ellen would be a welcomed escape and bright spot.
So, there you have it! What would you need?!
Kim
